Looking for a weekend escape that actually delivers? The Lake Naivasha drive from Nairobi is only 90 kilometres northwest, yet somehow packs in hippos, flamingos, geothermal gorges, and open-air cycling into a single trip. This is one of those Naivasha road trips that surprises you, even if you've lived in Kenya your whole life.

Getting There: The Drive Down the Rift Valley

The journey runs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours via the A104 Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. It's smooth, well-signposted, and genuinely beautiful, especially where the road dips into the Rift Valley escarpment. Our complete guide to driving through Kenya's Great Rift Valley covers fuel stops and viewpoints worth pulling over for.

You don't need a 4x4 for the main lakeshore road, but if Hell's Gate's rougher tracks are on your plan, it's worth considering. See our off-road vehicle guide for help picking the right car.

Leave by 7am Beat Nairobi traffic and you'll hit the lake with cool morning air. Birdwatching along the southern shore is genuinely stunning in that early light.

What to Do Once You Arrive

Cycle Through Hell's Gate National Park Hell's Gate is one of Kenya's only parks where you can pedal freely among wildlife, zebras and giraffes roaming alongside you, no vehicle required. Car hire runs KES 600–800 per day at the gate. It's the kind of thing that still feels surreal even while it's happening.

Take a Boat Safari on the Lake A one-hour boat safari costs around KES 1,500–2,000 per person and brings you right alongside hippo pods. Time it for dusk and you'll catch flamingos heading to roost, it's worth every shilling.
